Christine mangan author6/10/2023 ![]() Those who like books that delve into characters’ thoughts and psychology behind their actions will find a lot to love in Tangerine. Mangan uses simple language and manages to weave a thriller which is slow-burning and deeply psychological, while also vividly evoking the colours of Morocco. The downside is that Mangan’s book gets much too close in its plot and characters to Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr Ripley, but it is still an intriguing and enjoyable read. When John disappears, Alice and Lucy have to question both their relationship and their lucidity. Unexpectedly, Lucy also arrives to Tangier to rekindle her friendship with Alice after a year of separation. ![]() Alice, who shared friendship with Lucy in the past, is now married and lives with her husband John in Tangier, Morocco. ![]() The story is about two women – Alice and Lucy, who take turns in the story to share their thoughts on past and present events. Tangerine is a debut novel which is now both gaining visibility and provoking some strong reactions – there are apparently as many people who love this book as there are those who hate it. ![]()

Mister Splitfoot by Helen McCloy6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Matheson was a solid mid-century novelist of horror, SF, and fantasy, best known for I Am Legend, which has been filmed no less than three times Stir of Echoes became a feature film in 1999. The only novel out of all of these that has any resonance is A Stir of Echoes, another Richard Matheson gem. Lots of horror/gothics, fantasy, science fiction, and a slew of trashy men’s action-adventure series. Now, Avon is best known for its many harlequin romances, but back in the day it was a powerhouse of genre fiction. Bernice l mcfadden sugar6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Overcoming separate and horrific tragedies, Pearl and Sugar form a bond that opens up their hearts and minds to finally embracing the joys and wonders that life has to offer. As soon as she put these two women together the story came to life and the writing flowed with such ease that I was finally able to lose myself in the story. The beginning was slow and the writing a bit uneven, but the author drew me in with the characters of Sugar and Pearl. To read this novel is to take a journey through loss and suffering to a place of forgiveness, understanding, and grace.Īt first I wasn't sure that I was going to enjoy this book as much as I did. Sugar brings a 1950s southern town vibrantly to life, with its flowering magnolia trees, lingering scents of jasmine and honeysuckle, and white picket fences that keep strangers out - but ignorance and superstition in. ![]() Over sweet potato pie, an unlikely friendship begins, changing both their lives - and the life of an entire community. Sugar moves next door to Pearl, who is still grieving for the daughter who was murdered fifteen years before. ![]() Celebrating ten years of literary acclaim, this anniversary edition brings this timeless tale of a mother's loss and transformation to a new generation of readers.Įvoking the rich atmosphere of the deep South, Sugar tells the story of a young prostitute who comes to Bigelow, Arkansas, to start a new life. Needless to say, she read a lot in those days and often composed wretched stories for her sister’s amusement. There were also crazy vegetarian parents involved. The colloquy of monos and una6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() It almost doesn’t feel like Edgar Allan Poe have written it. The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, an apocalyptic science fiction story first published in Burtons Gentlemans. The writing style is far from good or even okay. So this is the reason why I give this one so low rating. The whole potential of this story for me at least wasn’t used as it could have been. This one have all the points which a good gothic story should have which of course is the gothic vibe, romance, dark mood and a deeper meaning behind it.Īnd to be honest but I got Friedrich Nietzsche vibes from this one which was really strange for me. However I need to give this story points for being uniquely imagined and very creative in its own way. I don’t know why but this one did not appeal to me which is really strange because I usually like stories like this one. These were the words upon whose mystical meaning I had so long pondered, rejecting the explanations of the priesthood, until Death himself resolved for me the secret. This one is all about the conversation between two lovers who have gone beyond the grave. Yes, fairest and best beloved Una, born again. ![]() ![]() He describes feeling Una by his side all the way to feeling the worms slowly devour his empty body. Monos died first and describes being conscious of his surrounding from his death until after his burial. It focuses on two people, who are apparently in love, discussing their passing away from the mortal plane. ![]()
